Le mouvement Camphill fut créer en Écosse par l'autrichien Karl König en 1939 selon une pédagogie curative dont le fondement est la conception anthroposophique de l'être humain développée par Rudolf Steiner. Cette pédagogie vise à permettre aux personnes handicapées à vivre de manière autonome dans la mesure de leurs capacités.
A Ballytobin et dans les autres CAMPHILL, ils recrutent pour l'été des summer co-worker pour travailler dans leurs champs dans lesquelles ils font de l'agriculture biodynamique. Ballytobin est un CAMPHILL spécialisé dans l'éducation des enfants compagnons. Pour cela ils ont une école Rudolf Steiner ou ils mélangent les enfants des familles du Camphill, a ceux du coin et aux enfant compagnons.
